In the Western world of the mid-19th century, change was everywhere: slavery was being abolished, industry was booming and urbanisation was growing rapidly. Internationally, New Imperialism brought large parts of Asia and Africa under colonial rule. Artists, writers and thinkers strove to find new ways of depicting this new world.
