In this course we will engage in a study of contemporary India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. Planned topics of study include colonialism and the emergence of nation states; political structures and economic development; literature, music and film; religion; language and ethnicity; nationalisms; gender; and peace and conflict. We will draw on a wide variety of sources including academic writing, journalism, poetry and novels.
